Brussels region council suspends cooperation agreement with Israel
Israel-Belgium, Politics, 4/1/2002

The council of Brussels region has decided to suspend the cooperation agreement signed with Israel in 2000, to protest the escalation of violence against the Palestinian people.

The decision was made following a motion sponsored by the Francophone Socialist Party and approved by the Ecologists (French-speaking and Flemish), the Flemish Socialist Party, and the Social-Christians (opposition).

The motion calls the government not to initiate any new project under the cooperation agreement.

The Socialist Party also called the regional government of Brussels, one of Belgium's three autonomous regions, to inform the parliament prior to the resumption of cooperation with Israel.

Last December, the Flemish autonomous government had suspended its relations with Israel to protest its violence.
