Moroccan political parties and ngo's condemn barbarous aggression against palestinian president
Morocco-Palestine, Politics, 4/1/2002
The "Koutla Dimocratia," a coalition of four Moroccan parties, condemned the "barbarous aggression" against Palestinian president, Yasser Arafat.
The Koutla, which held on Sunday an extraordinary meeting over the situation in the Palestinian territories, voiced backing to the numerous initiatives by King Mohammed VI at the Arab, Islamic and international scenes to ensure protection to the Palestinian people, defend their rights and lift the blockade imposed on the symbols of Palestinian sovereignty, mainly leader Yasser Arafat.
The Koutla, which musters the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP of prime minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi), the Istiqlal Party, the Party for Progress and Socialism (PPS) and the Organization of Democratic and Popular Action (OADP), also called the international community to endeavor to put an end to the unfair siege on the Palestinian people and the invasion of Palestinian territories, which is a clear breach to international legality.
The four parties expressed resolve to mobilize all their energies to show, together with the Moroccan people, all forms of solidarity with the Palestinian people and cited, in this regard, the sending of memos to the United States embassy in Rabat, the European Union presidency and the United nations organization.
The koutla parties, whose leaders called on the Palestinian ambassador in Rabat in a show of solidarity, appealed for a massive participation in a demo slated for this April 7 in Rabat.
Several other Moroccan parties have also urged for an end to the aggression and for massive participation in next Sunday's march, including the Constitutional Union (UC), the newly set-up Citizens Forces (FC), the Justice and Development Party (JD) and "Attajdid wal Islah" movement. The Moroccan press union (SNPM) contacted the international journalists federation and other professional associations to ask for an emergency action to bring the Zionist entity to lift restrictions imposed on the Palestinian media and condemn Israel's repression of journalists.
In Casablanca, the Democratic Labor Confederation (CDT/close to the USFP) held a rally to denounce Israel's criminal practices against the unarmed Palestinian people. The CDT secretary general called for massive mobilization to back the Palestinian people in their struggle against the Israeli occupation.
The rally, which took part in the presence of member of the Palestinian Liberation Popular Front (FPLP), Omar Khatich, denounced the siege imposed on the Palestinian people and on president Yasser Arafat.
On the occasion of the Palestinian Earth day, another rally was held in Rabat with the participation of several political parties and NGO's. Khalid Sefiani, chairman of the Moroccan association of support to the Palestinian people struggle, said it is the duty of Arab leaders to adopt a confrontation plan in case Israel fails to positively respond to their peace plan, endorsed in Beirut during the latest Arab summit (March 27-28).
Over the week-end, king Mohammed VI, chairman of Al-Quds committee, has been holding intensive contacts with Arab leaders and conducting international moves. As soon as he heard the news of the Israeli soldiers invasion of the head office of the Palestinian president, King Mohammed VI held phone talks with the Palestinian President to renew Morocco's full backing and solidarity with the Palestinian people and leadership against the new Israeli escalation waged by the occupation forces in blatant defiance to Arab and international will to establish peace.
King Mohammed VI also reaffirmed to President Arafat his determination to carry on efforts to mobilize international, Islamic and Arab backing for the triumph of the legitimate struggle of the brotherly Palestinian people to liberate their land and establish an independent state with Al-Quds Asharif as capital.
The king also held phone talks with King Abdallah II Ibn Al-Hussein of Jordan over the dangerous and serious Israeli military escalation in the Palestinian territories. On Saturday, the sovereign held a meeting in Beirut with Lebanese president, Emile Lahoud, acting chairman of the Arab summit, Lebanese premier, Rafic Hariri and held phone talks with Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak. King Mohammed VI also held phone talks on Sunday with Ariel Sharon, calling him to immediately put an end to the military operations in the Palestinian territories, to lift the siege imposed on President Arafat and to guarantee the Palestinian president's physical integrity. In addition to these contacts, the sovereign sent on Friday messages to the presidents of the USA, France, Russia, China and to the prime minister of Britain, the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, urging for action to end the Israeli military operations.
