Fighting between Sudanese and rebel forces
Sudan, Politics, 4/1/2002

The Sudanese army on Sunday announced it repulsed an attack launched by the rebellion movement at Niyal Dio to the north of Nanito city in the oil production area in the province to the west of the Higher Nile.

The official spokesman for the Sudanese armed forces said in a statement to the Sudanese daily al- Ayam issued in Khartoum on Sunday that heavy losses were inflected in the rebel movement, carried out on Friday at Niyal Dio area, stressing that this area is completely safe together with other oil producing areas.

The Sudanese army spokesman strongly denied what was stated by the movement, in a statement about the killing of 300 Sudanese soldier and arresting other 300. He said that that the rebel movement deliberately make media lies whenever it is defeated.

However, the rebel movement on Saturday issued a statement in which it claimed restoring back Niyal Dio area from the hands of the Sudanese forces and the killing of 300 soldiers.
