Call for an Arab court on Human Rights
Regional, Politics, 3/30/2002
Some 275 non- governmental organizations rallied in the "International Alliance For Justice" which aims to try the Iraqi leaders, called for founding "An Arab human rights court."
In a message addressed to the secretary general of the Arab League AL, the alliance said that the "priority of certain legitimate issues like the Palestinian question should not make us forget other pivotal issues which, for their part, are the actual reasons for the absence of peace and stability in the region." The alliance added:"we do express our hope to the foundation of an Arab court for human rights similar to those that exist in other areas of the world."
It continued: "we do also hope that the Arab League will convene in the near future a conference to discuss the Kurdish issue in the region." The alliance indicated that agents for the Iraqi regime in Beirut in 1994 assassinated a well-known Iraqi opposition figure who was Sheikh Taleb al-Suheil. It called on the Lebanese authorities and the judiciary to "start trying the assassination without delay."
Since years, this alliance seeks to establish an international criminal court to try the Iraqi leaders under the charges of committing war crimes against humanity and massacres.
