Syria-Palestine, Politics, 3/28/2002
A woman diplomat at the US embassy in Damascus and one local staff employee in February paid a visit to " al-Quds " radio which is run by the People's Front For the Liberation of Palestine, which is black-listed by the US.
A statement issued by the embassy on Wednesday said that " two representatives for the public diplomacy at the US embassy in Damascus met in February with the director general of al-Quds radio to discuss the radio's programs."
The statement added that the " the public diplomacy office is responsible for relations with the Syrian mass media and the meeting with al-Quds radio falls in this respect."
However, this is the first contacts disclosed between a US diplomat and officials at the People's Front For the Liberation of Palestine, General Command, listed since the beginning of the 1990s in the list of " foreign terrorist organizations," prepared by the US state department.
The Palestinian al-Quds radio started broadcasting from Damascus in 1987. Officials at the People's Front For the Liberation of Palestine say that this radio is the mouthpiece for the Palestinian people. For his part, the director of al-Quds radio Abu Shadi indicated another meeting he held on March 16 with the deputy chairperson of the American center in Damascus Synthia Witlessi, accompanied by the American writer Mariam Cooke. Cooke presented her book "Hayati: My life" in which she presented the story of the Palestinian woman during three generations. Abu Shadi said that al-Quds radio broadcasted an interview with Mariam Cooke on March 17.
