Member of British parliament says Sahara partitioning is unacceptable
Morocco-UK, Politics, 3/27/2002

A British MP, member of the Conservative party, Derrick Conway, said Morocco's attachment to its territorial integrity is a rational attitude while Algeria's proposal to partition the Sahara is unacceptable.

In an interview with "Assabah" daily published this Wednesday, Conway, who also chairs the Moroccan-British friendship Group at the House of Commons, said he is convinced that Moroccans will not accept the partitioning option, stressing that the British parliament supports the UN draft framework-agreement, devised by the UN secretary general's personal envoy, James Baker. This option gives Sahara population a large autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.

He further stressed that good relations are possible between Morocco and Algeria, given the geographic proximity, noting that it is only legitimate and normal that Morocco endeavors to protect its borders.

Of the case of Moroccans held in Polisario jails located on Algerian territory, the British MP who took part earlier this March 17-22 in Marrakesh in the 107th conference of the Inter-parliamentary union insisted that they should not be the object of any bargain, especially that Morocco had released all the soldiers it was detaining, a gesture that was welcomed by the international red cross committee and Amnesty International.
