Fund-donors to meet next april over sustained development and water in Africa
Regional, Economics, 3/26/2002
The African Development Bank will hold next April 15-17 in Accra, Ghana, a regional conference on water and sustained development in Africa, the ADB announced in a statement.
The conference will seek to promote rational and sustainable use and management of water resources as a way to reduce poverty.
Last September, the ADB held a high-level conference in Abidjan to launch its policy on integrated management of water resources and set up an enlarged network for water resources management and implementation of an integrated management policy.
The release says the ADB is committed to promote an approach based on water cost reduction as most of consumers in its member countries are unable to bear costs on the infrastructure needed for water production, treatment and supply.
The release also notes that in Africa, the overall irrigated area only represents one fourth of the potential, only 5% of electric energy is generated by dams and 4% of renewable water resources were used in optimum management conditions. Almost half of the population does not have access to drinking water and 66% of the population cannot use an adequate sanitation system.
