Football: three Moroccan clubs cruise to coming rounds of African cups
Morocco, Sports, 3/26/2002
Morocco's champion club, RAJA of Casablanca, managed to qualify for the coming round of the African Champions League following a 3-1 away win over Wallidan of Gambia in Banjul.
Travelling to Gambia with a narrow 2-1 victory of the little-fancied Wallidan, the Moroccans left nothing to chance rushing to the attack throughout the first half. The Gambian team, although dangerous in the first leg match played in Casablanca, were an easy prey to the experienced RAJA players.
RAJA's play-maker, Omar Najjari, organized all his team's attacks, although he missed a clear scoring chance on a penalty.
Few minutes into the second half, Najjari beautifully served Fran¨ois, a Cameroon striker with RAJA, who scored the opener for his side. But the Gambians immediately equalized on a defense mistake.
The same Najjari, sent a deep ball to Mohamed Ali Dialo, a Senegalese, who put RAJA ahead of their challengers of the day, before sealing RAJA's victory towards the end of the game.
RAJA, three-time winner of the African trophy, will have to defeat Congo-Brazzaville's Etoile club next April to join the League's quarter-finals. The away match will be played in mid-April in Casablanca.
In the African Cup of Cup Winners, WYDAD of Casablanca, one of Morocco's high-prized clubs, made a brilliant performance Saturday in Casablanca, defeating Senegal's Sonacos club 3-0.
The first leg match, played two weeks before in Dakar, wounded up with a scoreless draw.
WYDAD will play Cote D'Ivoire's Alliance club in the quarter-final.
FUS of Rabat could not do better than a 1-1 draw with Libya's Attahadi club to move to the quarter-final. The away match in Libya went to FUS 3-1.
The Rabat team will play Guinea's Satellite Club in the quarter final.
