Maher: Arab solidarity conference, held at critical stage
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 3/21/2002

Egyptian Foreign minister Ahmed Maher said on Wednesday that the emergency conference for Arab solidarity committees is held at a critical stage given the serious challenges besetting the Arab nation.

Addressing the conference, he said all the expected recommendations the conference will definitely back the Arab leaders when they meet at the Arab Summit in Beirut on March 27.

Maher said the conference really highlights the great role the non-governmental organizations and civil society institutions are playing in the Arab states.

Maher said the conference will discuss Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Arab lands, the establishment of the Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital and settling the Palestinian refugee's issue.

Maher's word was read out on his behalf by Ahmed Hamroush, Head of the Egyptian committee for solidarity with the Afro-Asian peoples.

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, on his part, said all Arab efforts should continue until Israel abides by international legitimacy resolutions and pulls out forces from the occupied territories.

He said the Arab summit will come out with a unified Arab stance that will send a decisive message not only to Israel but to all sides concerned with the stability and security of the region.
