Egypt, Jordan discuss Saudi initiative, supporting Palestinians
Egypt-Jordan, Politics, 3/19/2002

Egyptian President Mubarak discussed yesterday with Jordanian Premier Ali Abu Ragheb "the efforts exerted at various levels to put an end to the Palestinian people's tragedy and the carnage inflicted on them due to the Israeli aggressive policies."

The meeting also discussed the current US moves for saving peace process, issues to be tackled by the next Arab summit and the Saudi initiative in the light of contacts held by Egypt and Jordan with various international parties.

During the meeting, President Mubarak assigned Abul Ragheb to convey a verbal message to king Abdullah II of Jordan.

"The talks held on Monday by Jordanian Prime Minister Ali Abul Ragheb and his Foreign Minister Dr. Marwan EL Maashar with President Hosni Mubarak come within the context of regular consultations among Arab countries and running arrangements for the coming Arab summit set for march 27 in Beirut," Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher told reporters following the meeting.

They discussed the current conditions in Palestinian territories and the ongoing efforts to appease them and put an end to the Palestinian people's tragedy resulting from Israeli aggressive policies, he added.

Discussion also covered American efforts in this respect, he said.

Egypt's top diplomat called upon the whole world to support efforts aimed at halting Israeli aggression on Palestinians and resuming political negotiations.

"The meeting also took up Beirut summit, the Saudi peace initiative and outcome of consultations held by Egypt and Jordan with the various international parties," Maher said.

Cairo will witness over the coming days Arab consultations that start Tuesday with Saudi Foreign Minister Saud AL Faysal's visit to Egypt, to be followed by other visits at the highest level, he added.

All those activities aim at rendering Beirut summit success, he said.

Maher called for securing the free movement of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat so that he may take part in the Arab summit.

He said whether Arafat attends or not, Saudi Arabia would submit its initiative and Arabs are prepared to endorse it.
