Difference between human rights commissions in Syria
Syria, Politics, 3/19/2002
Chairman of the the committee in charge of human rights in Syria lawyer Aktham Nueisah opposed the Arab human rights program offering a prize to the human rights society in Syria which is led by lawyer Haitham al-Maleh, ignoring thereby, as he said, the role played by his organization.
The Arab Human Rights organization answered this protest by saying that it had done the same towards Nueisah in the past and that Syria has now an additional person who deserves to be honored.
This is however the first time in which a friction of this kind takes place in Syria between such kind of societies which follow up human rights in Syria.
The Arab human rights program's director Sabri Muhammad said that the program had defended Nuueisah and met with Syria's ambassadors in various countries, including Syria's former ambassador in Cairo Issa Darwish. Muhammad added that the organization called for releasing Nueisah when he was in prison and that the organization celebrates the world's day for human rights activists on March 17, the date when Nu'eisah was arrested and this is a way of honoring him.
