Ruler of Kuwait confers with Cheney
Kuwait-USA, Politics, 3/19/2002
The Ruler of Kuwaiti Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah on Monday in Kuwait received the US Vice President Dick Cheney and members of the accompanying delegation, currently visiting Kuwait.
Earlier in the day, Cheney discussed with the Kuwaiti foreign minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad bilateral relations between the two countries and main developments in the Middle East and its impact on the peace process in the region.
In a joint press conference with Cheney, Sabah said that the Middle East has recently witnessed negative developments that constituted a serious threat to the peace process and also of pushing the whole region to armed confrontation. A matter which requires the move to support the peace process.
Sabah condemned the acts carried out by Israel in the occupied Arab territories, stressing that these Israeli acts do not help the peace process in the region.
He explained Kuwait's rejection to any military act against Kuwait because such an act will be damaging for the whole region.
For his part, Cheney said "I want to assure the people of Kuwait that the United States remains fully committed to doing everything we need to do to defend Kuwait's sovereignty and independence."
Cheney expressed his convection on the need to exert all efforts to stop blood-shed between the Palestinians and the Israelis, calling on the two sides for returning back to negotiations.
