Women MPs hold 7th session in Marrakesh
Regional, Politics, 3/18/2002
Women parliamentarians opened in Marrakesh on Sunday their seventh session, in parallel to the 107th session of the Inter-parliamentary union (UPI).
The women law-makers are debating themes pertaining to women's rights in multilateral negotiations and effects of environment degradation.
The meeting was chaired by Moroccan MP, Badia Skalli, who told participants that most Moroccan political parties have adopted the quota system to increase the presence of women in their structures and the same quota system is likely to be adopted for next September's elections.
For chairwoman of the IPU council, Najma Heptullah, women have to be promoted into genuine partners in the promotion of democracy and enable them to fully enjoy their rights.
Speaker of the Moroccan house of representatives, Abdelouahed Radi, hailed the dynamism of women parliamentarians within the Inter-Parliamentary Union, before stressing that women have to be present in all decision-making centers.
Women account for 14.2% of the 39,8000 parliament members worldwide. Swedish women are the ones who hold the highest number of parliamentary seats with 42.7%.
