Sudan, Politics, 3/18/2002

The Khartoum criminal court ( North) chaired by judge Muhammad Serr al-Khatem Gharbawi on Saturday issued a sentence provided for finning the chief editor of the Sudanese daily al-Watan Sayed Ahmad Khaleifa of 3 million Sudanese pounds for issuing an article on the travel of Sudanese officials to perform al-Haj rituals at the expenses of the government of Sudan.

The Sudanese minister of spiritual guidance Issam Eddine Ahmad al-Bashir filed a judicial case against al-Watan chief editor because of the said article.

The whole case only took one session and another session was held on Saturday during which the sentence was voiced without listening to statements by the said chief editor which stressed he would have appealed the sentence yesterday (Sunday).
