The European Union calls for implementing UN resolutions

The European Union has called for urgent implementation of the UN Security Council resolution no.1397 which speaks to a Palestinian state and to lift all restrictions imposed on the move of the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat.

News reports said that heads of the European states and governments of the European Union approved in an urgent meeting they held on Thursday evening in Barcelona a declaration in which they said that UN Security Council resolution 1397 should be urgently implemented especially its call to immediate halting of all forms of violence including acts of terrorism, provocation and destruction.

On Tuesday evening, the UN Security Council, at the initiative of the US, adopted resolution no. 1397 on the Middle East that for the first time mentions a Palestinian state, speacking of a vision for a region where the two sides of Israel and Palestine live side by side within international recognized and secure borders.
