House of representatives passes press code
Morocco, Politics, 3/15/2002
The Moroccan house of representatives (lower chamber of parliament) on Tuesday passed a new press code.
Fifty eight MPs voted for the bill, while one MP voted against. Twelve representatives abstained.
Commenting the new law, culture and information minister, Mohammed Achaari, said the bill guarantees the citizens' right to information, journalists' right to access information sources and the practice of the profession within the respect of the constitution, the law and ethics.
Opposition parties noted the bill is still incomplete and should be put under scrutiny with the participation of professionals.
The Press Union (SNPM) rejected the law and journalists covering the vote session were wearing armbands as a sign of protest.
