Jordan will prevent an anti- Israel demonstration
Jordan, Politics, 3/15/2002
The Jordanian minister of the Interior Qaftan al-Majali said that the Jordanian authorities will prevent a demonstration against Israel, called upon by Islamists today without getting a prior licensing.
Al-Majali said in a statement which was quoted by Petra news agency that any demonstration which does not get a prior consent from the authority is considered a "violation to the law." He said that the ministry will "withstand such a call and any violation to the law, firmly, will not permit making any march or festival, unless being according to the law.
However, the Jordanian opposition Muslim Brothers group in Jordan called for a "mass parade" today after Friday's prayers "in solidarity with our people in Palestine."
In a statement, the group called on all various mass media to cover the said demonstration which is decided in Sweileh, one of the headquarters where the Islamic trend controls in Amman.
Just one month after the eruption of the Palestinian Intifada by the end of September 2000, Jordan banned demonstrations after 60 policemen were wounded and one demonstrator was killed during demonstration against Israel.
Last Friday, 3,000 persons mostly Islamists staged peaceful demonstrations in al-Baqaa and al-Wahdat for the Palestinian refugees in Amman and near the university of Jordan.
