Egypt, Jordan, Morocco welcomes UN resolution 1397
Regional-Palestine, Politics, 3/15/2002

The secretary general of the Arab League (AL) has welcomed the recent UN Security Council resolution no 1397 and called for its implementation especially through sending UN observation force.

In a statement AL Secretary General Amr Moussa considered the said resolution as "an objective and turning point in the international dealing with the Arab- Israeli conflict." He added that the UN resolution 1397 and the speech made by the UN secretary general Kofi Annan to this end are "considered a clear message to the Israeli government, embodying the world's total rejection to the policies of killing and repression pursued by the Israeli forces hysterically against the Palestinian people."

For his part, the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Maher welcomed the resolutions and described it as a good start and a firm position towards halting the Israeli measures. He considered that this resolution is the first "document issued by the UN recognizing the foundation of a Palestinian state, rather placing it on equal footing with Israel regarding its rights and the need that both ( Israel and Palestine) should live in a secure and internationally recognized borders.

The Egyptian minister indicated that the US after a long period of time of UN Security Council rejection to discuss ME issues or releasing resolutions to this effect "has not only approved the issuance of this resolution but also formulated it which reveals a new spirit by the side of Washington."

In Amman the Jordanian foreign minister Marwan al-Mashaar welcomed the decision. He said in statements to the Jordanian news agency Petra that his country "views the resolution positively on that it is the first resolution which the US has voted on since a long time, which in itself the beginning of a change in the American position towards the Palestinian question."

In Rabat, Morocco, the head of the Jerusalem committee expressed satisfaction over the UN resolution 1397 and described it as a "remarkable progress towards finding a solution" for the Arab Israeli conflict.

In a statement, the Moroccan foreign ministry said that this resolution for the first time indicates the foundation of a Palestinian state within secure borders and recognized by the side of Israel.
