Al-Assad discusses with Talibani the American threats against Iraq
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 3/15/2002

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday discussed the American threats against Iraq with the secretary general of the Kurdistani National Federation party Jalal al-Talibani who stressed his party's rejection to striking Iraq and its commitment to the unity of the Iraqi territories.

While a Syrian official source said that "discussions dealt during the meeting with matters pertinent to Iraq especially the American threats," sources of the Kurdistani national federation party told reporters in Damascus that the meeting which lasted for more than one hour dealt with "exchanging view points on various sensitive and important issues taking place in the region and in Kurdistan, in particular." According to the sources al-Talibani stressed his rejection to striking Iraq and the commitment of the Kurds in Iraq to the "Iraqi territorial integrity." The sources added that al-Talibani stressed to President al-Assad that the federation is looking forward to "democratic parliamentary united Iraq that takes part in the struggles of the Arab nation." Stress was laid on "supporting the Palestinian revolution. On Syria's rejection of the idea of changing the Iraqi regime by means of force."

The sources said that the federation sees this matter from "the perspective that the Iraqi people is the one who decided their fate" and that the "issue of changing a dictator by another dictator is rejected."

On Wednesday the Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam and the assistant secretary general of the Baath Party Abdullah al-Ahmar received al-Talibani.
