Syria: UN resolution 1397 ignores the land for peace principle

Syria has defended its position by abstaining from voting on the recent UN Security Council resolution 1397 which was issued by a unanimous 14 votes, defining an international vision to establish two independent states, Palestine and Israel.

The Syrian minister of information Adnan Omran described the said resolution as vague, incomprehensive and ignores any sign to the principle of land for peace.

In a statement issued in Damascus on Thursday Omran explained that the reason why Syria abstained from voting on the said resolution at the UN Security Council was because the UN Security Council can not talk about a Palestinian state without confirming that this state is based on the basics of UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338 which confirm the border of this Palestinian state on all the territories occupied in 1967 and without also confirming its previous resolutions relating to Jerusalem and the Israeli settlements as well as the resolution of the UN General Assembly number 194 provided for the right of the Palestinian refugees to their homeland -- rights which are indispensable.

The Syrian minister added that the said resolution is vague to the extent that it avails to give the chance for escaping its implementation especially it held equal both the aggressor and the victims and gives no signal to resuming the peace process according to the land for peace formula.
