Algeria: 50 wounded in confrontation between the Berber and the security forces
Algeria, Politics, 3/14/2002

At least 50 persons were wounded among the protesting Berber groups in clashes with the Algerian security forces in al Qabayel area. This comes following the Algerian President Abdul Aziz Butaflika recognition of the Amghazi language as an official language beside the Arabic language with the aim to alleviate tension in the region.

In earlier time, Berber leaders said that Butaflika's promise to give the Amghazi language the same status as the Arabic language came very late to the extent that he will not succeed to calm down the area before the elections.

People in Teizi Ozo city, which is the focal point of the protests against the government said at least 50 demonstrators were wounded in the clashes with the security forces in the city, which is 90 Km to the east of the capital Algiers.
