UN Security Council issues a resolution for a vague 'vision' to establish a Palestinian state
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 3/14/2002
On Wednesday early morning the US Security Council released a decision on the Middle East stating a vague vision for the founding of a Palestinians state. It called for halting all acts of violence without holding Israel responsible from the crimes it committs on daily basis against the Palestinian people.
The resolution described "a vision of a region where two States, Israel and Palestine, live side by side within secure and recognized borders."
The U.S.-sponsored resolution, drew one abstention from Syria -- the only Arab state with a seat at the Security Council.
This resolution was met by political criticism and was considered as a backtrack from other UN resolutions issued earlier as this resolution ignores the consequences resulting from the Israeli aggressions and "treated on equal footing the criminal and the victim and did not condemn Israel for its crimes against the Palestinians." Syria's representative at the UN Mikhael Wahba said that the decision of the UN security council is weak because it does not deal with the main reason for violence mainly because of the Israeli occupation. He said that this resolution puts the assassin and the victims on equal footing. Wahba added that the UN Security Council should have had called for the resumption of the ME peace process according to the terms of the Madrid conference which was convened on the ground of UN resolutions 242 and 338 and the land for peace formula, and that the Security Council should force Israel to implement those resolutions.
The Arab group at the UN has proposed a draft resolution calling for dealing with realities on the ground and the sufferings of the Palestinians inflected by the Israeli practices, but the resolution which was issued by the US Security Council and was proposed by the US ignored these facts despite the flexibility shown by the Arab side.
Israel received this resolution of the UN Security Council positively and an official at the Israeli foreign ministry said that his ministry will study this resolution and an official statement will be issued to this effect.
