Damascus: arresting a banker, changes targeting director generals
Syria, Politics, 3/12/2002

Syrian official sources said that the director of the Syrian commercial Bank Nadim Mithqal was arrested and brought before the economic security investigation judge, at the time when the prime minister Muhammad Mustafa Miro had changed directors general in various sectors in the country within few days.

The state- run official daily Tishreen said that "after the central commission for auditing and inspection submitted inquiries on Mithqal's committing criminal violations on that he allotted a sum of money owed to the Bank ( the Commercial Bank) in one of the "marginal" foreign banks without observing banking rules," the director of the Bank, which is considered one of the largest in Syria, was arrested last Thursday.

Tishreen said that although Mithqal had known the deteriorated conditions of the " foreign bank where he allotted the sum, he did not take the necessary measures to preserve the sums of the Syrian commercial Bank. A matter which inflected losses in the public assets estimated at USD 5 million.

Within the same context, Miro had made several changes at the level of directors general in various sectors of the state in the course of a campaign which include among others, a request for efficiency, fighting corruption and a general attitude by the government to shorten the service period of director general to four years.
