Al-Shara confers with Moratinos on Palestinian situation

The Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara on Monday in Damascus met with the European ME special envoy Miguel Moratinos and members of the accompanying delegation. Senior foreign ministry official attended the meeting.

Discussions dealt with the tense conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories as a result of the oppressive acts committed by Israel on daily basis against the Palestinian people.

Al-Shara stressed the responsibility of the international community towards what is taking place in the occupied territories and to putting an end to the aggressive Israeli practices.

Following the meeting, Moratinos said in statements to the press that he told al-Shara about the unwavering commitment of the European Union, through the meeting of the foreign ministers of the European Union EU member states and the European summit to be held by the end of the current week to taking a clear position on the need of ending what he called violence in the occupied Palestinian territories and to give political proposals to facilitate the return back of the Israeli and Palestinian sides to the table of negotiations.

Moratinos stressed the great interest of the EU to support any Arab peace initiative, noting that al-Shara informed him about the efforts made to direct a clear message to the world and to Israel during the coming Arab summit in Beirut on an Arab initiative to establish peace in the region on the ground of UN resolutions and the land for peace formula.
