King Mohammed urges world leaders to take necessary moves for immediate resumption of middle east peace negotiations
Morocco-Palestine, Politics, 3/11/2002

Following the serious deterioration of the situation in the Palestinian territories and the deadly armed attacks of Friday that resulted in unprecedented casualties and that were preceded by the Israeli raids against a building next to President Yasser Arafat's offices, King Mohammed VI has sent, in his capacity as chairman of Al-Quds Committee, personal messages to George W. Bush, President of the United States of America, Vladimir Poutine, President of the Federation of Russia, Jose Maria Aznar, acting chairman of the European Council, and Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations.

In these messages, the sovereign vehemently denounced the systematic resort to military action by Israel, which stubbornly opts for the logic of force, imposes blockade against the Palestinian people, causes unacceptable tragedies and human sufferings and exacerbates the feelings of frustration and despair among the Palestinian population.

Beyond its tragic consequences, this Israeli policy, based on an exclusively security approach, has evidenced its objective limits.

King Mohammed VI notes that this escalation coincides with some initiatives meant to reestablish security and peace in the region. Likewise, H.M. the King deplores that the deterioration of the situation takes place at a time the outstanding initiative of the Heir Apparent of the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, H.R.H. Prince Abdellah Ibn Abdelaziz is prompting positive responses and at a time Arab Countries are actively preparing for the Beirut Summit.

Therefore, the sovereign urges the heads of state and senior officials to whom he addressed the royal messages to take the necessary firm measures for an immediate resumption of peace negotiations without any conditions nor prerequisites, on the basis of the gains scored since the Madrid Conference, and especially the accords signed and the commitments made by the Israeli and Palestinian sides.

In this respect, the King notes the importance of the recommendations of the Mitchell report and the pertinence of the measures provided for in the Tenet plan.

King Mohammed VI deems that this is the sole, unique possible way to stop the spiral of violence and destruction and open sure perspectives to peace in the region and to security for all its countries and peoples, in line with international legality and in conformity with the various relevant resolutions of the United Nations Organization.

In the same vein, King Mohammed VI, the Commander of the faithful, sent a message to Pope Jean-Paul II, wherein he calls the Pope to use his spiritual influence and moral weight to contribute to an immediate halt of violence and of the resort to force against the defenseless Palestinian populations and the innocent civilians.

The sovereign underscored the sacred values of the three revealed religions and their common condemnation of deadly actions and of all attempts to human dignity and life, as well as to the noble ideals of justice and peace between the sons of Abraham, may peace be upon him.
