Sharon releases Arafat, opening the door for his participation at Beirut's summit
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 3/11/2002
Israel has canceled the home arrest measure imposed on the chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat in Ramullah.
Arafat welcomed the Israeli decision and called for opening new page. The chairman of the Palestinian authority Yasser Arafat declared Arafat's release under the most violence air raids against the headquarters of the Palestinian presidency in Gaza, Nablus and Bethlehem.
In a festival held by the Engineering unit in the Israeli army Sharon announced that the Palestinians arrested all executors of the assassination operation of the Israeli minister of tourism Rahbaam Zeifi and those who are responsible for smuggling the " Karin weapon ship." A matter which means that the Palestinians had carried out the conditions set by the Israeli government in order to enable Arafat from moving.
Observers see that the decision to abrogate the "home arrest" imposed on Arafat in Ramullah will avail the chairman of the Palestinian territories to travel to the Arab summit by the end of the current month. This decision will be submitted to the mini Israeli cabinet in the few coming days.
In a televised interview Arafat said that the Palestinians are ready to resume the negotiations immediately and to open a new page in the relations with Israel. Arafat added that "the Palestinian side is committed to its position to implement Mitchell and Tenet reports." Arafat called on the international community to interfere and send UN observers. This position, however, was the Palestinian answer to the statements made by the Israeli prime minister.
