Egyptian-Tunisian higher committee probes implementation of Aghadir agreement

A Trade Committee between Egypt and Tunisia will meet during the coming few days to prepare for the higher committee meetings between the two states. Egypt's ambassador to Tunis Mahdy FatehAllah said that the meeting will focus on means of increasing economic and commercial cooperation.
It will probe as well mechanism of carrying out the four way Agadir agreement between Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan and Morocco to set up a free trade zone.
On tourism cooperation between the two countries FatehAllah pointed out that bilateral cooperation can overcome the current crisis in tourism. He added that Egypt will participate next March in Mediterranean countries tourism conference in Tunis.
On the other hand, Egypt and Tunisia agreed to study exempting all commodities between them from customs tariffs, especially the manufactured agricultural products, said Foreign Trade Undersecretary Sa'eed Qassem on Thursday.
In statements upon his return from Tunis Qassem said he had a series of meetings with the Tunisian officials on doubling the volume of trade exchange between them, estimated in 2001 at $ 86.5 million.
He said he discussed the possibility of increasing the trade exchange between the two countries to $ 300 million annually. He added that the committee also discussed the hurdles facing the increase of the Egyptian-Tunisian trade exchange.
Qassem said the committee underlined the importance of the private sector's role in beefing up investments between Egypt and Tunisia in the domains of ready-made clothes, textile, auto parts, foodstuff, medicine and construction materials.
He added that the committee also discussed Agadir Declaration aiming at setting up a Free Trade Area (FTA) between Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia and Morocco.
He said the two sides agreed to hold another meeting in Cairo in September to study calling off customs tariffs on all trade dealings between the two states.
