Russian archaeologists possibly nearing Menf
Egypt, History, 3/9/2002
Russian archaeologist Sergey Ivanov said archaeological survey works have revealed the features of large buildings that might be palaces or houses of Menf, the capital of the ancient Egyptians.
He said that two-metre-long tiles, used to pave the roads, pedestals of columns and a large amount of earthenware were discovered.
A Russian newspaper said in a report a Russian archaeological mission is conducting wide-scale excavations in Egypt for the first time in many years and reached unique results.
The paper quoted a Russian Egyptologist in the Russian Science Academy's Orientalism Institute as having said that this is the first Russian mission that conducts excavations in a location that attracts archaeologists, that is Memphis or Menf, the capital of ancient Egypt during the Pharaohs' era.
"The discovery of Menf is possible, bearing in mind that the I River Nile water has never submerged this spot at all," she said.
"Russian archaeologists unearthed a statue of a head of a man wearing the traditional Pharaonic head cover and is probably one of the Pharaohs who belong to the 26th Dynasty," she added.
