Morocco's territorial integrity discussed with Romanian officials
Morocco-Romania, Politics, 3/7/2002

Morocco's territorial integrity and the latest developments of the Sahara issue were at the focus of talks held Tuesday in Bucharest by a visiting Moroccan parliamentary delegation and several Romanian officials.

The Moroccan delegation, headed by speaker of the Chamber of Advisors (upper house), expounded at separate meetings with the Romanian prime minister, the speaker of the house of representatives, and with the ministers of education, commerce, industry and scientific research the efforts being made by Morocco for a sustainable development in its Southern provinces.

The speaker of the Romanian Senate had underlined at an earlier meeting with the Moroccan delegation the seriousness of the proposal on the Moroccan Sahara partitioning as such a move would shake the stability of the whole region.

"Romania, which suffered for its territorial integrity for a long time, is aware of the seriousness of the partition proposal (of the Moroccan Sahara), and of the impossibility to apply it in view of the impact it would have on stability in the region," the senate speaker said.

Talks also covered ways to bolster economic relations mainly through a closer partnership between the two countries' private sectors and the promotion of investment.

The stay conditions of Moroccan students enrolled in Romanian Universities were also brought up.
