Four Jewish groups boycott meeting with Mubarak
Egypt-USA, Politics, 3/7/2002
The representatives of four Jewish- American groups had boycotted a meeting with the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday under the pretext that he did not extend an invitation to a Jewish official who criticized the Egyptian media.
The representatives of the Jewish groups said that the Egyptian authorities were persistent to alienate Aby Foxman, the director of what is so called the "Anti- Defamation League" from the meeting because of his criticism of the Egyptian press which he claimed to be anti- Semitic.
The representatives of the four Jewish groups said they abstained from participation in the meeting with Mubarak, in solidarity with Foxman.
Meantime, information minister said Safwat AL-Sherif asserted yesterday that leaders of Jewish organizations in the US expressed hope that President Hosni Mubarak would put things right in the Middle East.
"They expressed hope that efforts made to contain the deteriorating situation in the region would yield positively and that Egypt under President Hosni Mubarak would get parties back on the right track and stop violence," Al Sherif said.
The leaders of Jewish organizations in the States said that President Mubarak's visit came at a critical and important moment, Sherif said, describing Mubarak as the main partner in the peacemaking process and that positive impact on the process.
Mubarak highlighted the freedom which the press enjoys in Egypt.
