Amnesty International Morocco section elects new secretary general
Morocco, Culture, 3/5/2002

The Morocco section of Amnesty International (AI) elected Sunday Saad Regragui secretary general, in replacement of Mohammed Sektaoui.

The section, which held its second assembly March 1 through 3, also elected the members of the executive committee and approved the reports of the commissions dealing with strategy and finance.

A.I. Morocco section conducted several moves, encouraging the government to sign all international human rights conventions, and adapt Moroccan laws to international standards in this realm, the outgoing secretary general told the opening session.

The section also endeavors to back Morocco's educational programs related to human rights culture, the aim being to generalize this culture, to publicize the mechanisms for preserving human rights and to foster awareness to the dangers of human rights violation.

Human rights education targets not only teachers and civil servants working in the sector but also the civil servants in charge of enforcing laws such as magistrates, gendarmerie and police officers and jails staff.

Regragui (49), a surgeon from Tetouan, is one of the founders of AI Morocco section, established in June 1998.
