Al-Assad visits Saudi Arabia tomorrow
Saudi Arabia-Syria, Politics, 3/4/2002

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will arrive in Jeddah on Tuesday in a visit to Saudi Arabia lasts for two days during which he will be meeting with the Saudi King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz and the crown prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz.

Arab diplomatic sources in Riyadh said on Sunday that al-Assad's talks with the Saudi leadership will deal with the developments of conditions in the Middle East region especially in regard to the Arab- Israeli conflict in light of the Saudi peace initiative besides discussing works of the Arab summit due to be held this March in Beirut.

The sources said that the Syrian president whose country kept silence so far concerning the Saudi initiative, will discuss with the Saudi crown prince its details especially the stand concerning the restoration of the Golan heights and the position of the US administration concerning the initiative in light of the contacts recently made between Riyadh and Washington.

The sources said that the Saudi leadership will learn from the Syrian President and the secretary general of the Arab League on the results of contacts with the US administration, the last of which was the meeting held last Thursday in Jeddah between the Saudi crown prince and the US under secretary of state for the Near East affairs William Burns. Discussions then dealt with the new peace initiative.

The spokesman for the US state department Richard Boutcher praised the initiative of the Saudi crown prince and described it as " positive and important not only for its nature but to the fact of announcing it."
