Mary Robinson concerned Israeli attacks against Palestinians
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 3/2/2002
UN Human Rights High Commissioner Mary Robinson called on Israel to immediately pull out of Nablus and Jenin refugee camps.
In a statement-marking conclusion of her two-day visit Friday night, Robinson regretted the Israeli incursion into the refugee camps, killing 17 Palestinians.
I would like to express dismay at the incursion of the Israeli Forces in the two refugee camps in Nablus and Jenin, resulting in the death of about 17 Palestinians and one Israeli soldier, and the injury of many more Palestinian refugees, in total disregard of international human rights and humanitarian law.
"I join United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Anna in calling for the immediate withdrawal of the Israeli army from the refugee camps for an end of the attacks in densely populated areas and for ensuring full respect to the immunity of humanitarian facilities," she said.
"I view with concern the growing perception of a double-standard approach to the serious situation in the region," said Robinson.
"I continue to maintain that this state of human rights cannot be resolved except through a just political settlement based on international legitimacy," the statement said.
"I would therefore strongly urge all parties concerned to redouble their efforts to find a political way forward," it added.
Meantime, UN Human Rights High Commissioner Mary Robinson praised progress scored by Egypt in human right related issues. In a press conference Friday night, Robinson voiced pleasure to visit Egypt and admired openness she touched during her talks with ministers in all issues.
