Yemen: Presidential pardoning for 10 socialist leaders
Yemen, Politics, 3/1/2002

It is expected that the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh will release a presidential pardoning for 10 of the leaders of the socialist party who were sentenced after being convicted in the "conspiracy of the war of the Summer of 1994."

The party in 1994 carried out a cessation attempt that was doomed to failure.

Yemeni political sources said that the Presidential pardoning was including four leaders of the "Socialist party" who are sentenced to death. They are the former vice President Ali Salem al-Beid, the former prime minister Haidar Abu Baker al-Attas, the defense minister Haitham Qasem and the deputy premier for security and defense affairs Saleh Obeid Ahmad.

These sources disclosed that several leaders of the Yemeni socialist party leaders abroad will retunrn back very soon to the country, including the speaker of the parliament Yassin Saeed Nu'man.

He added that the People's Congress party which is headed by President Ali Abdullah Saleh and the Yemeni socialist party which is led by Ali Saleh Abbad has started dialogues relating to the contribution of the socialist party by an effective role in the Yemeni political life during the coming phase especially after the war of Summer 1994 and the boycott of the said party to the elections of April 1997 resulted in a weakness in its presence in the state's departments and the level of its activity in the political life.

These sources considered that the ruling People's Congress party is seeking to have the Yemeni Socialist party playing a tangible role in the local and parliamentary elections due to be held in April, noting that the Yemeni leadership underlined the importance of the Party's wider participation in the political life.
