Maghreban consultative council committees hold meetings in Algiers, Nouakchott
Algeria-Maghreb, Politics, 2/28/2002

Algiers is playing host as of this Thursday to the meeting of the political committee of the Maghreban consultative council (parliamentary body of the Arab Maghreb Union/UMA), while Nouakchott is hosting since Wednesday the meeting of the basic infrastructure committee.

Moroccan delegations are participating in both meetings.

The delegation to the Algiers meeting includes the first and second vice-speakers of the House of Representatives, Abdelaziz Alaoui Hafidhi and Amin Demnati.

Alaoui Hafidhi, who is chairman of the committee, told reporters upon arrival in Algiers Wednesday, the meeting will discuss political issues, and also cultural, economic and social issues.

Participants will assess the implementation of previous recommendations as well as the UMA political process and will probe relations between the consultative council and UMA at large with the European Union and other Mediterranean countries.

The basic infrastructure committee is focussing on ways of consolidating basic infrastructure in the UMA member countries and is looking into proposals related to roads, transport, postal services and telecommunications, struggle against desert encroachment and environment protection.

The Moroccan delegation to the meeting is led by member of the chamber of advisors (upper house) Sidi Mohammed Akhtour.
