Thousands demonstrate in Brussels in solidarity with Palestinian people

Thousands of people rallied Wednesday in front of the European Union Council's offices in Brussels to express solidarity with the Palestinian people.

The protesters, who flocked to Brussels from different regions in Belgium, as well as from France and Italy, chanted slogans against the Israeli occupation, the EU-Israel association agreement, and the weapon deals between the Union and the Israeli government.

The demonstrators also called for the implementation of the relevant UN resolutions and the deployment of an international force to protect the Palestinian people.

The demonstrators, supervised by tens of Belgian, French and Italian associations of support to the Palestinian people, were to stage later on a silent march towards the European Parliament to convey their grievances to the different political groups.

A similar demonstration was to be staged in another sensitive area in Brussels before the holding of a huge rally.

The demonstration was staged on the morrow of new developments in the Middle East dossier, following the Saudi initiative on an Arab normalization with Israel in exchange of total withdrawal from the occupied Arab territories. The Saudi initiative was welcomed by several Arab states as well as by the European Union and the United States, US secretary of state Colin Powell having described it as an important, positive stride.
