Israeli court postpones considering Azmi Beshara case
Israel-Palestine, Politics, 2/28/2002

The Israeli court in al-Nasera city postponed until April 7th considering the case of the Palestinian intellectual Azmi Beshara who has been tried by the Israeli occupation authority over his national and Arab commitment stands.

The Israeli radio said that the defendant lawyers for Beshara submitted their preliminary claims to the court during the trial which lasted for 6 hours over lifting parliamentary immunity from him and the accusations addressed to him on calling for the Palestinian Intifada and resistance against Israel.

One of Beshara's defendant Lawyers, Riyadh Anees stressed that such unprecedent trial cannot continue especially as Beshara's case is political, basically and openly refutes the Israeli claims on the freedom of expression, that is guaranteed for members of the Knesset in order to express political views.

On Wednesday the Israeli authorities started its trial of Azme Beshara amid a vast Arab solidarity campaign with him and with the struggle mounted by the Palestinian people against "the Israeli occupation and its aggressive and racist policies." Thousands of Arabs and Palestinians carried out several sit in and demonstrations events in Gaza and al-Nasera and in several Arab capitals in protest of trying Beshara.

The Arab parties, organizations, commissions and figures stressed in statements released on Wednesday that "this trial discloses clearly Israel's racist nature and its false allegations on democracy and human rights."
