US's Zinni visits Sanaa on Saturday
Yemen-USA, Politics, 2/28/2002

The US administration for the Middle East Gen. Anthony Zinni, who is also the former commander of the UN forces will arrive in Yemen on Saturday in a visit aiming at preparation for the expected visit to be held by mid March to Yemen by US Vice President Dick Cheney.

Yemeni sources said that the successive visits carried out by American officials and the last of which was the visit of the director general of the American intelligence George Tenet, are an indication to the special importance given by Washington to Yemen in the framework of their cooperation to fighting terrorism. The sources indicated that the US administration places Yemen within the list of countries nominated to play a key role at the regional level in the future under the implications resulted from the incidents of September 11 of developments in the Middle East region and the world.

Meantime, the Abnaa al-Yemen ( Yemen's people ) League party has called on the Yemeni political leadership to pursue the principle of clarity and transparency concerning the level of security cooperation, depending on American forces to fight terrorism and eliminate extremist members who are suspected to be involved in terrorist acts and are in Yemen. The party said that it is Yemen's right to cooperate or to seek the help of the US "temporarily" to fight terrorism. It considered that this matter is a legitimate right, but it, on the other hand, stressed the need that this should be made according to the texts of the constitution, the law and transparency concerning this cooperation and seeking the help of the American military forces.
