Egypt's ambassador to Spain denies al-Feilali testimony
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 2/28/2002

The higher state security court ( emergency) in Cairo on Tuesday listened to the testimony of the Egyptian ambassador to Spain Hussein al-Hareidi in which he denied what was stated by Sharif al-Feilali, whose trial has been repeated after he was found not guilty on the charge of spying for Israel.

A judicial source said that al-Hareidi denied what was stated by al-Feilali concerning details that took place with him upon going to the embassy to give information about the attempt of using him to spy against him.

The ambassador said that al-Feilali came to the embassy saying that he has information and had met with the trade attache who "wrote a memorandum I have read and found in it strange matters and therefor I submitted it to the foreign ministry," which by its turn sent it to the Egyptian general intelligence. The ambassador stressed he never met with al-Feilali and denied what al-Feilali said that he received USD 5,000 as a grant for what he gave of information, saying " I never heard of that."

For his part, the representative of the state's security called for utmost penalty against the al-Feilali which is live hard labor, not death penalty due to the state of peace between Israel and Egypt.

The court found al-Feilali ( 53 year old ) as not guilty of the accusations addressed to him on spying for the interests of Israel in June 2001. But President Hosni Mubarak refused, in his capacity as head of the military, to ratify the decision on September 5th, 2001 after an appeal submitted by the state security department to this effect. The trial started on September 19 and al-Feilali was tried under the charges of providing the Israeli intelligence department " Mossad " with military and economic information about Egypt. Also life with hard labor sentence in absentia was taken against a former Russian army officer in the same context.

Al-Feilali was arrested on September 27th, 2000 under the charge of "spying for the Israeli Mossad and getting money from it for providing it with information about political, economic and military conditions in Egypt and of endangering the national security interests in the country."
