Who is Azmi Beshara
Palestine, People, 2/27/2002
Azmi Beshara was born in al-Nasera city in 1956 of a state - employee father (Antoine Beshara) and a mother from al- Nasera, of al-Ramah village. He was brought up in al-Nasera and is still living there.
Ever since his early youth he has been involved in national and patriotic activities. He studied law and philosophy in Jerusalem and got a doctorate decree in philosophy from Hambuld university in Germany and became a university teacher. He moved to organized political activities and established "the democratic national coalition" and allied with standing Palestinian parties like "Haraket Abnaa al-Balad " (the homeland's children movement). He got himself involved in elections and succeeded and became a member in the Israeli Knesset in 1996.
In 1999 he nominated himself for the elections for the post of the prime minister in Israel and this raised heated debate between supporters and those who opposed this step. Since one decade he has been involved in unmasking the contradictions that lie in the very existence of Israel. He raised public debate in Israel when he invented the phrase "a state for all its citizens." He worked for enriching the Arab identity inside Israel after years of isolation and established several relations with certain Arab states especially Syria.
He organized the visits of delegations of the Palestinians of 1948 to their families and relatives since 1948 to Syria. He was deprived from parliamentary immunity on November 27, 2001 in a session that lasted for two days at the Israeli Knesset over "organizing visit to a foe country " and for "provoking violence." This foe country is meant Syria.
His presence is of special significance because he is a Palestinian militant inside Israel, known for his strategic vision to the Arab- Israeli conflict. He is of various activities. He has a presence at the public, university and Arab and international media level and plays a role in supporting the Intifada.
