UN chief to attend Arab summit

Steven De Mistora, the personal envoy for the UN secretary general in Lebanon said that the UN chief Kofi Annan will attend the Arab summit to be held in Beirut on March 27 and 28.

Following his meeting on Tuesday in Beirut with the Lebanese foreign minister Mahmoud Hammoud, De Mistora informed of Annan's consent to accept the invitation extended by the Lebanese President Emil lahoud to attend the summit. He said he had discussed with Hamoud this very important summit which is awaited for by Lebanon, the Arab states and the world as a whole, describing it as historical.

De Mistora indicated that the UN chief will stay for two days in Lebanon so as to be able to support Lebanon's initiative to hosting the summit.

For his part, the Lebanese minister of Culture, Dr. Ghassan Salamah, who is in charge of preparing for the Arab summit, welcomed the UN chief attending the summit and expressed hope that this summit will meet the aspirations of the Arabs to attaining a just and comprehensive peace. SANA.
