British Days at Moroccan University
Morocco-UK, Culture, 2/26/2002
British Days will be held at the Moroccan Al-Akhawayn University of Ifrane next March 5-6 to publicize British projects and initiatives in Morocco.
The event is also meant to establish constructive contacts at the academic, economic, cultural and social scales, said Britain's ambassador to Morocco, Anthony Layden, at a press briefing in Rabat Monday.
The Days feature four workshops on inter-cultural dialogue, media and change, sustained tourism and investments in Morocco. The workshops will be moderated by Moroccan and British academics, businessmen, NGOs' activists and journalists.
The event also features an exhibition on the activities of British enterprises operating in Morocco, cultural activities (music concerts, films screening, a play performance) and a cricket match between the Moroccan and British teams.
The British government has chosen Morocco as one of fourteen target markets worldwide for a special three-year campaign of trade development. The campaign is destined to fill the information gap in the target countries and to establish closer links between the private sectors.
In the campaign first year, Trade partners UK (the British government department responsible for promoting overseas trade) will give priority to disseminating more and better information on Morocco for companies in the UK, including a full program of presentations across the UK on Morocco. The aim is to encourage more British trade missions in Morocco to look for suppliers and buyers. In the second and third years, the campaign will consist of more promotional work in Morocco and in the UK, including trade exhibitions, well-researched up to date information and visits in both directions.
The UK is Morocco's 3rd largest export market and 6th largest import market. In 2000, UK exports to Morocco totaled 6.7 billion Dirhams while imports were worth 7.7 billion DH. Bilateral trade tripled during the 1990s and in 2000, Moroccan exports to the UK increased by 18% and imports increased by 15%, compared to 1999.
