Morocco, Britain to announce birth of business council

Morocco and Britain will officially launch on Wednesday their business council to promote cooperation between the two countries in economic, trade, financial and investment fields.

The council will be chaired by Mourad Cherif, general manager of the Omnium Nord Africain holding and Sir David Walker, top official at the Morgan Stanley institution.

The Moroccan-British business council will be launched in the presence of royal advisor, Andre Azoulay and minister of industry, trade, energy and mining, Mustapha Mansouri.

Its main objective will be to supervise a three-year promotion activities, launched by Britain which has chosen Morocco as one of fourteen target markets worldwide for a special campaign of trade development. The British government has allocated 1.2 million pounds to this campaign, which also features the exchange of business groups. One of these missions is presently in Casablanca to hold a video-conference on business opportunities in Morocco.

Meanwhile, Al Akhwayne university in Ifrane (an Atlas mountains resort), will host next March 5-6 the British days in Morocco, meant to consolidate bilateral cooperation and set forth means to consolidate them in economic, political and cultural realms.

The UK is Morocco's 3rd largest export market and 6th largest import market. In 2000, UK exports to Morocco totaled 6.7 billion Dirhams (US$ 577.5 million) while imports were worth 7.7 billion DH (US$ 669.5 million). Bilateral trade has tripled during the 1990s and in 2000, Moroccan exports to the UK increased by 18% and imports increased by 15%, compared to 1999.
