Libyan airlines to resume flights to France
Libya-France, Politics, 2/26/2002
Seif al-Islam al-Qaddafi, son of the Libyan President Muaammar al-Qaddafi arrived on Monday afternoon to Paris on board of an Airbus A 300- 600 of the Libyan airlines, inaugurating thereby the resumption of flights between Tripoli and Paris after a cessation of 11 years.
Seif al-Islam is accompanied by a large delegation composed of 70 persons including member of a popular folk troupe which is scheduled to perform a show at the UNESCO headquarters, according to one of al-Qaddafi;s escorts.
However, regular flights will start on this line on February 28. Air flights have become possible after the UN suspended its sanctions used to be imposed on Libya in 1999. The visit of Seif al-Islam al-Qaddafi to France and the resumption of air flights marks the improvement of French- Libyan relations.
Seif al-Islam who seemed pleased, and who occupies no political position in Libya, said that he came to Paris in order to attend the inauguration of a roving exhibition for his drawings at the Arab world institute to be held under the title "the desert is not silent."
Al-Qaddafi was welcomed at Orley airport by the French ambassador in Paris and members at the French- Libyan chamber of commerce. This visit is considered an official one though it does not include talks with French officials. It is the first of its kind for a member of al-Qaddafi family to France.
