11 killed, 22 wounded in battles among Somalis
Somalia, Politics, 2/26/2002

Some 11 persons were killed and other 22 wounded during clashes took place between warrying Somali factions in the capital Makadishu.

The battles in which machine guns and weapons were used took place in Medina to the south west of Makadishu between the gunmen of the war lord Mousa Soudi Yalahu and supporters of his former ally Omar Mahmoud Muhammad, they are members of Abqal tribe.

The two former allies and the officials at the United Somali Conference -- the Somali national alliance -- split in December when Omar Mahmoud Muhammad signed a peace agreement with the provisional national government. A matter which Yalahu opposed.

Despite the fact that the provisional national government was formed in 2000, Somalia lacks an actual central leadership since the collapse of Muhammad Seyad Berri in January 1991. This provisional government only controls a small part of the capital Makadishu and its suburbs.
