Regional, Economics, 2/26/2002

The ministers of labor and representatives of the organizations of business owners in the Arab states will discuss during the conference of the Arab Labor which will be held in Cairo in March the economic and tourism consequences resulting from the September 11 attacks on the conditions of Arab workers.

In a report it prepared according to an Egyptian proposal to be debated to the Arab labor conference, the Arab Labor Organization stressed that the incidents of September 11 laid dark shadows on Arab economics and contributed to raising unemployment rates, to decrease work opportunities and economic reform programs in several Arab states and increasing the spirits of hatred and racism against Arabs and Muslims in the US and Europe.

The report added that September 11 incidents also resulted in minimizing future investment opportunities from Europe and the US to the Arab states, noting that the sectors of tourism, transport, aviation and services were the most vulnerable.

The Arab Labor organization also warned against the sudden return back of the Arab immigrants to their homeland because of the consequences resulted from the incidents of September 11 and because of the harassment imposed on many of them.
