Socialist party expresses total refusal of sahara partitioning proposal
Morocco, Politics, 2/25/2002
The Socialist Union of Popular forces, of Morocco's premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi, expressed total refusal of the Sahara partitioning proposal contained in the latest UN secretary general's report.
The USFP political bureau, which held a meeting end of last week, says this proposal does not facilitate the work of the security council to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in the region.
The USFP release published Friday by the party's daily in Arabic warns that the partitioning idea will trigger a series of tensions that threaten to annihilate all efforts made to establish peace, put at stake the future and lead to instability in the region, if it is endorsed by the Security council.
The USFP which calls the UN security council to give time to negotiations on the framework-agreement says it would be "illogical" to indulge into discussing this (partitioning) option for eight months while the quest of means to implement the settlement plan has taken over nine years.
The socialist party says the UN secretary general and his special envoy oughtn't be envisioning a new option as long as all possibilities of the framework-agreement have not yet explored. For the USFP the partitioning option, leaked by Algeria last June, unveils once again Algeria's expansionist covetousness and its sudden renunciation of the self-determination principle it was supposedly upholding.
The USFP also wishes that the Security Council would extend the mission of the MINURSO in order to continue seeking ways to implement the framework-agreement.
