EU - Mediterranean archaeological preservation project
Regional-European Union, Culture, 2/23/2002
PISA's aim has been to mainstream "Integrated planning in archaeological sites" into the policies, operations, and practices of governments and public and private stakeholders, as well as to promote the concept with the general public in the 5 Mediterranean Partners involved (Algeria, Israel, Morocco, Tunisia, and the West Bank & Gaza Strip).
The project was coordinated by IMED in agreement with the Italian Ministry of Culture, and in collaboration with the institutions responsible for the management of cultural heritage in 4 European Union Member States (Germany, Greece, France, and Italy), and the 5 Partners concerned. Within PISA research-action was carried out on 9 archaeological sites, 5 thematic laboratories were organised, a training course for site managers was held, and planning seminars involving local stakeholders and decision makers took place.
Five pilot projects have been developed from there, each dealing with one archaeological site selected by one Mediterranean Partner (Caesarea Maritima, Cherchell, Dougga, Jericho, and Lixus). A crucial part of the Conference will be the discussion of future political-strategic guidelines and the definition of a "Euro-Mediterranean Charter on the Integrated Enhancement of Cultural Heritage."
Participants will include institutional representatives, international experts, partners in the PISA project, and economic and social stakeholders.
