Arab League chief stresses opposition to striking Iraq, summit urgently need
Regional, Politics, 2/22/2002
The secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa has warned that if a just solution for the Palestinian question is not reached stability will not be attained in the region. He stressed that Israel's attempts to liquidate the Palestinian questions reveal its ill desire to attain a just solution for this question.
Moussa during his meeting with the satelie TV station "Dream" on Thursday stressed the Arab states continue to cling to peace as a strategic option and held Israel responsible for the tense and deteriorated conditions in the Palestinian territories as a result of its continued aggressions against the Palestinians.
The AL chief stressed that the Arab summit has become an urgent must for all Arab states and peoples in order to attain a turning point in the common Arab action, noting the determination of all Arab states to convene the next Arab summit at its due time and place in Beirut by the end of March.
Moussa renewed categorical rejection of the AL to direct any military strike at Iraq or to any other Arab states. He warned against carrying out such strikes against the security and stability of the region as a whole.
The AL chief called for taking a united Arab position to withstand the grave challenges imposed at the meantime against the Arab nation.
He urged the US on the ground of its role as a main cosponsor for the Middle East peace process to interfere "neutrally and honestly" to find out a just and comprehensive solution for the Arab- Israeli conflict in line with the resolutions of the international legitimacy provided for Israel's withdrawal from all occupied Arab territories until June 4, 1967 border lines.
