Jordan refuses to release three Hizbullah members
Jordan-Lebanon, Politics, 2/22/2002

In its Thursday's issue, the Lebanese daily Assafir said that the Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri informed the Hizbullah leadership the refusal of the Jordanian King Abdullah II to release three of its members who were arrested in Jordan two months ago while working for smuggling weapons to Intifada forces in the occupied West Bank.

Assafir added that King Abdullah promised to resort to humanitarian measures to ensure the life of the three resistance men but without giving certain promises concerning their fate.

The paper added, according to information it received from a high ranking official at the ICRC that the US and Israel are pressuring Jordan to not provide giving facilities even if they are of humanitarian nature to the three Lebanese resistance men and that Israel is trying to invest the issue of the three resistance men in the pending deal of prisoners exchange between Hizbullah and Israel.

The paper indicated that the file of the Israeli prisoners at Hizbullah, noting that this file is facing great difficulties because of the persistence of Israel to put conditions that do not suit the party, for getting information on the fate of the Israeli soldiers and the Mossad officer, while the Hizbullah party persists on releasing Lebanese detainees held by Israel in return for having all the information about the three soldiers.

The paper indicated that the German mediator in the issue of the Israeli prisoners informed Hizbullah that Israel agrees to release 150 Lebanese detainees but will keep both Sheikh Abdul Karim Obeid or Haj Mustafa al-Deirani until knowing about the fate of the Israeli pilot Ron Arad.

The paper indicated that new contacts have been made by Hizbullah and the German government in order to reactivate the mediation which depends on the decision of the Israeli government.
